Rasmussen: The Family Behind the Name

Gas logs for vented and unvented fireplaces are becoming more popular, and there are so many reasons to back that up. Though they have been on the market for many years, most people have preferred to stick with the old fashioned, cut logs. These days however, gas logs are giving many people a great reason not to cut down trees and fuel their winter fires with gas instead.

Made by the Rasmussen company, an industry leader when it comes to all things innovatively fire-related. Through four generations, they have consistently developed and manufactured products of extremely high caliber, that have changed the way people harness the power of heat to better suit their lives.

Rasmus Rasmussen officially went into business, opening a blacksmith shop in 1907. Trained in ironworks, he utilized his skills in classical blacksmithing as well as branching out and creating extraordinary fireplace screens and tools. This rapidly became a new outlet for creativity and income, and would set the scene for years to come. This spirit of innovation, evolution, and ability to change allowed Rasmussen Iron Works to delve into many different business ventures, and broaden the spectrum of products they made. Steel buildings, truck and vehicle body parts, and welding handles that would be used in the construction of World War II naval vessels are some of the areas of expansion Rasmussen covered. When the war was over, the next generation took the Rasmussen name in yet another direction: retail. Ted, the son of Rasmus, had the brilliant idea of opening a shop that would be dedicated to all things regarding fireplaces, at the helm of the manufacturing plant. One of the most profound aspects of this venture were the sale of gas logs.

Even though gas logs were in existence at the time, they lacked in realistic character. Ted Rasmussen’s son, T.R. took the family business yet another step further, and pioneered the gas log and burner products they are now very well known for. His epiphany moment came when he witnessed a plumber attempting to make natural gas travel through water, as means of entertainment in the lobby of a restaurant. This propelled T.R. to create the sand pan burner, which to this day, is still currently sold. This invention produced the most convincing flame for a gas log fire. He then painstakingly created beautiful logs modeled after true wooden logs because no manufacturer would. Every part of their creation was his brainchild, from the sketches, to molds, and then onto every tiny detail.

T.R.’s knack for innovation was definitely passed onto his own offspring, and currently, Rett, his son, continues to assist in the development of new products. The Chillbuster heaters, powered by gas logs, are an amazing way to heat a space. They can serve as an emergency source of heat, and can be used with remote controls. Electricity is not necessary to run these gas log heaters because they run on natural gas or propane. Just like gas logs in a fireplace, you do not have to worry about the safety of air quality. Additionally they are created with sensors for ultimate monitoring of the oxygen and gas levels in the air.

Taking the wood-free fireplace to yet another level, Rasmussen has also created the revolutionary FireStones, FireBalls, and FireShapes products to be used in ventless fireplaces as well as vented. Made of the same refractory ceramic as the wood gas logs, these designs are a modern alternative to the wood look. They offer a different look, and add a different element of design to the décor. FireStones have an organic look to them, and very much resemble stones on fire when lit. FireBalls have a sculpted look, and look like a stack of cannons when set up properly in the burner. FireShapes, on the other hand, offer the look of geometric sculpture, if you want a look that is a total contrast of wood.
